As New Zealand moves toward a low‑carbon future, the way we heat our homes and buildings plays a crucial role. A significant share of household energy use still goes into space and water heating, much of it powered by gas or other fossil fuels. Heat pumps offer a cleaner, more efficient alternative. By drawing energy from the air, ground, or water, they can provide warmth with far lower CO₂ emissions than traditional heating systems.

How Heat Pumps Work

A heat pump operates much like a refrigerator in reverse. Instead of removing heat from inside a fridge and releasing it outside, a heat pump extracts heat from the environment and transfers it indoors. Even on cool days, there is enough ambient energy in the air or ground for the system to capture and amplify for heating and hot water.

There are several main types of heat pumps:

  • Air‑to‑air heat pumps, which deliver warm air directly into living spaces.
  • Air‑to‑water heat pumps, which heat water for radiators, underfloor systems, or domestic hot water.
  • Ground‑source heat pumps, which use buried pipes to tap into the stable temperature of the earth.

All of them run on electricity, but they typically produce three to four times more heat energy than the electricity they consume.

A Key Part of the Energy Transition

As New Zealand’s electricity grid becomes increasingly powered by renewable sources such as hydro, wind, and solar, heat pumps become even more climate‑friendly. Instead of burning gas in each household, we can use clean electricity to generate heat efficiently and locally.

According to the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA), switching from a gas heater to a modern heat pump can cut household CO₂ emissions by more than half, depending on the system and the home’s insulation. In addition, heat pumps provide steady, controllable warmth and can also cool homes in summer.

Costs and Support

While installing a heat pump requires an upfront investment, the running costs are generally lower than for gas or electric resistance heating. Over time, the savings on energy bills can offset the initial expense.

Government programmes such as Warmer Kiwi Homes offer grants for insulation and efficient heating systems, including heat pumps, for eligible households. Local councils and electricity providers may also provide advice or financing options to make the switch easier.

Shared and Community Solutions

Beyond individual homes, shared heat‑pump systems are emerging as an option for apartment buildings, schools, and community facilities. These systems can supply heating and hot water to multiple users through a central plant, reducing both emissions and maintenance costs. In rural areas, small‑scale district heating networks powered by large heat pumps could replace diesel or LPG boilers, helping entire communities move away from fossil fuels.

The Future of Heating in Aotearoa

Heat pumps are not the only answer to decarbonising heating, but they are one of the most effective and readily available technologies today. Combined with good insulation, smart controls, and renewable electricity, they can bring New Zealand closer to its goal of net‑zero emissions by 2050.

For homeowners, choosing a heat pump means lower carbon emissions, reduced dependence on fossil fuels, and a more comfortable, energy‑efficient home.

Opting for a heat pump is therefore more than a practical decision—it’s a commitment to a cleaner, more sustainable future for Aotearoa.
