Less CO₂ with Heat Pumps: An Important Step Toward Fossil-Free Heating

In addition, heat pumps provide steady, controllable warmth and can also cool homes in summer.
Costs and Support
While installing a heat pump requires an upfront investment, the running costs are generally lower than for gas or electric resistance heating. Over time, the savings on energy bills can offset the initial expense.
Government programmes such as Warmer Kiwi Homes offer grants for insulation and efficient heating systems, including heat pumps, for eligible households. Local councils and electricity providers may also provide advice or financing options to make the switch easier.
Shared and Community Solutions
Beyond individual homes, shared heat‑pump systems are emerging as an option for apartment buildings, schools, and community facilities. These systems can supply heating and hot water to multiple users through a central plant, reducing both emissions and maintenance costs. In rural areas, small‑scale district heating networks powered by large heat pumps could replace diesel or LPG boilers, helping entire communities move away from fossil fuels.
The Future of Heating in Aotearoa
Heat pumps are not the only answer to decarbonising heating, but they are one of the most effective and readily available technologies today. Combined with good insulation, smart controls, and renewable electricity, they can bring New Zealand closer to its goal of net‑zero emissions by 2050.
