Positioning: Light Where You Need It

Good lighting design is about placement, not just quantity. Think in layers of light:

  • Ambient lighting: General illumination that helps you move around safely. Ceiling lights or recessed downlights with wide beams work well.
  • Task lighting: Focused light for activities like cooking, reading, or working. Adjustable desk lamps or LED spotlights are ideal.
  • Accent or mood lighting: Soft, indirect light that adds warmth and character. Use wall sconces, floor lamps, or LED strips behind furniture.

Avoid glare by positioning lights carefully, especially near glossy surfaces. Use shades, diffusers, or indirect lighting to create a more comfortable glow.

Make the Most of Natural Light

The most energy-efficient light is the one that comes free from the sun. Take advantage of New Zealand’s generous daylight hours by arranging living and work areas near windows. Light-coloured walls and ceilings help reflect sunlight deeper into the room, reducing the need for artificial lighting.

  • Dimmers let you adjust brightness to suit the time of day or activity.
  • Smart lighting can be controlled via app or voice command, allowing you to turn off all lights with a single tap – even when you’re away from home.

These tools not only reduce electricity use but also add comfort and flexibility to everyday life.

Think Sustainability – and Disposal

When replacing old bulbs, recycle them properly. Many councils and hardware stores in New Zealand accept used light bulbs for safe disposal. LEDs contain electronic components that can be recovered and reused, so don’t throw them in the general rubbish.

Choose products with a high energy rating (look for the Energy Rating Label) and check the manufacturer’s warranty – it’s often a good indicator of quality and longevity.
